PhD Theses 2019
In total, by the end of 2019 the ICMAB graduates amounted 272. During 2019, 18 PhD theses were defended, 8 women (44 %) and 10 men (56 %), and of the 27 supervisors of the graduated fellows, 12 were women (44 %) and 15 men (56 %).
PhD Theses during the Severo Ochoa period
During the Severo Ochoa period, a total of 64 PhD Thesis have been defended (16 in average per year), of which 58 % by men and 42 % by women. These PhD Theses have been supervised by one or two researchers each, giving a total of 107 supervisors, of which 50 % men and 50 % women.
Conferences and meetings
ICMAB researchers have presented their results in more than 136 international meetings and 35 national meetings. Of the communications, 66 were Invited Conferences, 75 Oral Communications, 7 Plenary Talks and 21 Poster Presentations.
The conferences are of a broad range of topics: superconductivity, phosphorus, boron and silicon, nanocomposites, materials science, coordination chemistry, nanoparticles’ applications, lithium batteries, organic and hybrid thermoelectrics, cellulose, solid state physics, paramagnetic materials, nanoscience and nanotechnology, low temperature electronics, synthetic metals, molecule-based magnets, medicinal chemistry, semiconductors, etc.
ICMAB researchers organized two international conferences that took place in Barcelona: the 8th International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (ICSE8) (26-31 May 2019) and the 10th International Symposium on Nitrides (9-13 June 2019).
Some ICMAB PhD fellows, together from PhD fellows from the ICN2, IMB-CNM-CSIC, UAB and ALBA, organized the 4th Scientific Meeting of BNC-b Students (6-7 June 2019), which was a total success.
In addition, ICMAB researchers co-organized many symposiums in international conferences and participated in the scientific committees and as chair members, and participated in the SOMMa 100xciencia.4 meeting organized in 2019 in Donostia/San Sebastián by the Basque Centre on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL).
ICMAB Workshops
Workshops and Summer schools
Within the Severo Ochoa Project, each RL organizes a workshop and/or a summer school per year.
Workshops are small conferences that typically last two days and feature international invited speakers. It also gives ICMAB students and young postdocs an opportunity for visibility of their research activity and exposes them to a stimulating international environment.
Summer schools are weekly long schools that include lectures and hands-on sessions with international professors and networking activities.
In 2019, the Molecular Electronics Research Line (RL4) organized the second edition of the Organic and Molecular Electronics meeting at ICMAB (ORGI2019). The workshop brought together groups from the ICMABA and from nearby institutions working on different aspects of Molecular Electronics (EURECAT, IMB-CNM, UAB…). The aim was to promote scientific collaborations and networking among researchers.
The Biomaterials and Multifunctional Nanostructured Biomaterials Research Line (RL5) organized the second edition of the Workshop on Spectroscopy Techniques: Generalities and Applications, to provide an overview of different spectroscopic techniques of interest for the whole scientific community working at the ICMAB and on nearby community.
Complementary skills courses and workshops
At the ICMAB we also make an effort to offer transversal knowledge to our researchers: skills on scientific presentations, use bibliographic tools, project management or how to protect knowledge through patent filling are essential. Researchers also learn scientific writing and results communication.
In 2019 we organized an Open Access: FAQS seminar, to celebrate the Open Access Week, and a seminar on ERC funding opportunities, with the presence of an ERC Executive Agency member, a member working at the European Projects Department at CSIC, and with the experience of some ERC grantees. Also we organized several workshops on good laboratory practices and new techniques, and a one-day event to promote our Scientific Equipment Platforms to the whole scientific community of the UAB Campus.
Support the participation in international conferences
The ICMAB financially supports the attendance to international conferences for our researchers (especially PhD and postdoctoral fellows), so that they can present their research outside the walls of the ICMAB.
