The Spectroscopic Techniques Laboratory provides different spectroscopic characterization techniques focused on the characterization of the different materials developed at the institute. It includes more general characterization techniques such as IR or UV-Vis-NIR as well as more specific ones such as electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR).
During 2019, a new UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer (JASCO V-780) to replace the Cary 5000 has been acquired. In addition, the optical microscope Olympus BX51 belonged to Spectroscopy Service until June 30. From July 1 onwards it started to be part of the ICMAB Electron Microscopy Service.
The UV-Vis-NIR (V-780 + Cary 5) equipment has been used by 72 users: 97 % internal users, from 21 ICMAB PIs and 3 % external users, from Nanomol Technologies. This corresponds to 758 h.
The FT-IR equipment has been used by 87 users: 98 % internal use from 23 ICMAB PI’s, and 2 % external use (Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron-Institut de Recerca (VHIR)). This corresponds to a total of 220 h.
The EPR has been used by 18 users (82 % internal, from 9 ICMAB PIs, and 18 external, from research centers and universities (Institut de Biotecnologia i Biomedicina (IBB-UAB), Universidad de Granada and Universidad de Málaga), giving a total of 363 hours, only including the equipment use (Data processing, simulation and interpretation not included).

The Service has participated in many science education activities such as the stay of high school students at ICMAB, from “Programa Argó” organized by the “Institut de Ciències de l’Educació (ICE)” of the UAB, showing some theory and practices with FT-IR and EPR equipment, during June-July 2019. The Service has also participated in the program “Joves i Ciència” to explain the EPR and IR techniques and their applications to the students (July), as well as in some other high school students visits. Moreover, the Service has participated in the open doors day of the scientific-technical services of the ICMAB with an informative poster, on October 28, 2019.
The Service has contributed in many scientific publications and as co-author in the paper Redox-Active PTM Radical Dendrimers as Promising Multifunctional Molecular Switches. Vega Lloveras, Flonja Liko, José L. Muñoz-Gómez, Jaume Veciana, and José Vidal-Gancedo. Chem. Mater. 2019, 31, 22, 9400–9412. The Service has participated in the projects DGICT-MINECO PN MAT2016-80826-R (MOTHER) and the technical support contract PEKPOL.
